Project:

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease characterized by excessive mucus in the lungs. As a side effect of such increased mucus, microorganisms find optimal conditions to grow and form biofilms that frequently lead to infection and inflammation in the respiratory tract. Women suffering from CF possess a significantly lower life expectancy compared to men, which is indicated by an earlier impairment of lung function due to chronic colonization of pathogenic bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa – an observation that is designated as CF gender gap. My research project involves the investigation of the impact of estradiol on biofilm development of pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa und Candida albicans isolated from CF-patient sputum. The biofilm analysing methods include biochemical quantification of biomass as well as fluorescence and ultrastructural microscopy. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis should reveal the underlying mechanisms of biofilm growth regulation on gene expression level. These new insights may sustainably improve CF therapy in a long term by providing new treatment approaches considering estradiol and its regulation.
