Congratulations Dr. Song... with assemblies of tiny cubes to his Ph.D. degree...

Qimeng successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis “Capillary Force-Driven Self-Organization of Microcubes for Multifunctional 3D Cell Microenvironments“ on July 5th 2019. In his thesis the central idea of the ERC project ASMIDIAS was finally realized in a massively parallel manner, exploiting self-assembly concepts at the water/air interface and applying this novel combinatorial approach for cell-surface interaction studies. Congratulations and all the best for your future!

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Siegen in the focus.

Our research in PC-1 and that of our colleagues in the School of Science and Technology is highlighted in a recent video.

Great success for Nicole, Daniel, Stephan and Sergey. Our cover image was chosen for J. Colloid Interf. Sci. & finally the identification of surface nanobubble and differentiation from silicone oil nanodroplets is accomplished!

The conclusive answer as to whether the tiny spherical cap-shaped features on surfaces at the solid-water interfaces, which are easily imaged by AFM, are indeed surface nanobubbles or silicone oil nanodroplets has been finally resolved by our new combined AFM-FLIM (fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy) approach. As reported in J. Coll. Interf. Sci. 2019, 547, 162–170. (Nicole Hain, Stephan Handschuh-Wang, Daniel Wesner, Sergey I. Druzhinin, and Holger Schönherr, “Multimodal Microscopy-Based Identification of Surface Nanobubbles”) the determination of fluorescence lifetime of a suitable tracer dye renders this possible for the first time with (a) high spatial resolution and (b) probing the gas-liquid interface. The cover page in J. Colloid Interf. Sci. (many thanks to Xiaoqiu Dou for instantaneous help with the graphics!) underlines the importance of the report and the great work of Nicole, Daniel, Stephan and Sergey. Congratulations!
